Responsibility for the oversight of this department is assigned to Gary E. Beck, Jr., Building Inspector. This office administers building regulations, as well as planning and zoning code, it develops and provides staff support for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.
Department staff addresses Planning, Zoning Enforcement, Zoning Variances, Zoning issues, Ordinance Enforcement including Construction Codes, Property Maintenance Code and Special Use Permits.
The Building Department consists of Building Inspector Gary E. Beck, Jr. and Deputy inspectors who issue all building permits, performs construction inspection, issues Certificates of Occupancy when appropriate, and enforces the Building Code of New York State, and pertinent sections of the City of Poughkeepsie Code of Ordinances.
All electrical, plumbing, and heating work performed in the City of Poughkeepsie must be performed by licensed individuals or firms. This division regulates and issues the appropriate licenses for Electricians and Plumbers. Historic District & Landmark Preservation Commission (HDLPC):
The HDLPC is a group of City residents, appointed by the Mayor, who are charged with reviewing all plans for the moving, exterior construction, alteration or repair, landscaping or demolition or any change in the exterior appearance of places, sites, structures or buildings designated landmarks or landmark sites and all places, sites, structures or buildings wholly or partly within the boundaries of a historic district. The Commission also considers applications for designation of historic landmarks and/or districts and makes recommendations regarding those applications to the Common Council.
Meetings are held on the 3rd floor of City Hall in Common Council Chambers on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7pm. Occasionally, due to holidays, meetings need to be rescheduled. It is suggested that anyone interested in attending a meeting contact the Building Department at (845) 451-4007. The HDLPC does not accept “walk-in” applications at meetings.
