Police - Emergency Services Unit
The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department maintains an Emergency Services Unit known as the ESU. This is a group of highly trained and experienced officers and detectives who execute special operations. These operations include high risk warrant service, high risk suspect search, hostage situations, counter terrorist operations and tactical rescue in volatile situations. The goal of the ESU is to employ highly skilled officers with specialized equipment to handle high risk incidents. The manner in which this is accomplished further protects and saves lives in the community.

The ESU maintains a large inventory of special weapons and equipment to handle high risk situations. It operates at the direction of the command staff and is activated internally within the department for special operation purposes. The members train continually both in-house and with other specialized units.
