PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department will be servicing and testing the City fire hydrant system.  This system is directly linked to the drinking water supply.

Be further advised that during the testing period, the water is safe, but should be run until it is clear; use caution when doing white laundry-it is recommended that you should wait a twenty-four (24) hour period after the testing has been completed in the vicinity of your neighborhood.

During the next three (3) weeks, hydrants in the southwest section of the City will be tested:

• Main Street – South to the City Limits
• South Hamilton Street – West to the Hudson River

Scheduled 10-20 hours or as needed

This position involves responsibility for driving a bus. The operator is responsible for the safety and conduct of the passengers. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed to the operator for independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  Candidates are subject to pre-employment physical/drug testing.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

1. Operates a bus on assigned routes.
2. Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting a trip.
3. Reports defects to supervisor.
4. Instruct passengers about safety practices.
5. Maintains orderly conduct of passengers.
6. Completes accident and vehicle maintenance reports.
7. Cleans interior and exterior of assigned vehicle.
8. Performs minor maintenance tasks on vehicle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid appropriate level NYS Commercial Drivers License at appointment.  The City prefers an applicant to have graduated from high school or possess a GED and have one year of experience driving a bus.

The Bulk Service Program runs from Monday, May 14, 2012 through Saturday, May 19, 2012 and Monday, September 10, 2012 through Saturday, September 15, 2012, during normal Transfer Station hours.

This program is for City residents only; one time per City resident per year.

Transfer Station Hours:

• Monday – Friday: 7:00am – 1:45pm
• Saturday: 8:00am – 12:45pm
• Sunday: Closed
• Closed all City Holidays

Drop off: No tipping fee for bulk items, one time per City address per year, up to a four foot by eight foot pickup size load with no walls on side of truck.  Construction debris, Yard Debris, Propane Tanks, Recyclables and Hazardous waste items are not allowed.

You must have photo identification and a recent utility bill (cable, telephone, or Central Hudson) to prove you are a City resident.  You must bring or accompany the bulk items yourself.  Household hazardous waste items (air conditioner, refrigerator/freezer, etc.) are not part of the program.  They can be dropped off; but, a separate fee will be charged (see Transfer Station Fees).

Pick-up: THE SCHEDULE FOR CURBSIDE PICKUP WILL BE WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2012 AND WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2012 ONLY. The fee for curbside service is$35.00 fee for up to five (5) bulk items (fee is waived for a senior resident of 65 years or older and disabled residents).

YOU MUST CALL IN ADVANCE TO SCHEDULE A PICK UP DATE AND TIME. PLEASE DO NOT PLACE ITEMS OUT UNTIL YOU ARE AUTHORIZED TO DO SO.

Items must be at curbside; we cannot remove them from your home.

To schedule a pick up, please call (845) 451-4111 or (845) 451-4050, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please leave your name, city address and a telephone number where we can contact you.  You will receive a call back and will be informed when the scheduled pick up will occur. At time of pickup, City residents must provide photo identification, a current utility bill with city address listed. Also at the time of pickup, you must have the exact cash amount or check/money order made out to the City of Poughkeepsie.  You will be given a receipt from the Sanitation staff member.

SALARY – $46,945.60 (STEP 0)

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

1.         Supervises the planting and care of trees, flowers, shrubbery and lawns;

2.         Directs the maintenance of parks and recreation areas, including playing fields, skating rinks, and swimming pools;

3.         Schedules and assigns work in accordance with seasonal requirements and weather conditions;

4.         Leads in work projects and works with personnel as needed on scheduled and emergency work projects;

5.         Supervises all snowplowing of parks and recreation areas, the arterial highway and some municipal parking lots;

6.         Supervises the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment in recreation areas;

7.         Requisitions supplies and equipment and makes budgetary recommendations pertaining to work projects;

8.         Maintains daily records and prepares reports on activities;

9.         Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance of grounds and recreation areas; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to keep detailed records and make reports; mechanical aptitude; reliability; resourcefulness; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EITHER:          (A)       An Associate’s degree in Horticulture, Natural Resources Conservation or a related field and one (1) year of work experience supervising and performing grounds keeping and park maintenance work;

OR:                  (B)       Three years of experience in grounds or park maintenance activities, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity;

OR:                  (C)       An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A) and (B).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

POSSESSION OF A VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE.  PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL AND DRUG TESTING IS REQUIRED.  APPLICANT MUST BE APPOINTED FROM THE CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBLE LIST.

The vechicle, which immediately fled the scene after the accident, is beleived to be a (2001-2005) GMC Yukon Denali, white in color, with white running boards and white side mirrors. The vehcile sustained damaged to the right front grill, right front fender, windshield post and mirror. Anyone with information about this incident that might lead to the indentification of the driver or owner of the vehicle in question should immediately contact the NYS Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-866-313-8477. Callers may remain anonymous if they so choose. The female victim received serious injuries and remains in Westchester Medical Center after numerous surgeries.
