Police - Patrol Divison
The Patrol Division is the largest division with the police department and is where every police officer begins his/her career. There is a total of nine squads that serve with the patrol division.

The patrol division is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week and is usually the first to be dispatched to arrive at calls for service as well as crimes already in progress. Police Officers within the patrol division are trained to prevent crime, maintain order and restore it when it has been violated. They also assist citizens in problem solving, traffic control, accident investigations, persons in need of assistance, and engage in conflict resolution. Beginning their career by entering the police academy they must undergo approximately 18 weeks of intensive training that covers topics such as constitutional law, penal law, criminal procedure law, juvenile law and procedures, vehicle and traffic law, report writing, domestic violence, mental illness, persons with disabilities, crimes in progress, intoxication, interviewing techniques, narcotics and dangerous drugs, case preparation, organized crime, and many other topics.

After graduation from the police academy, officers continue to receive training by field training officers, in the field, prior to working alone. Officers also receive training in may specialized areas, such as field training officer, crime scene technician, K-9, interview techniques, photography, accident investigation and reconstruction, school resource officer, drug recognition expert, and many other areas.
