Police - Traffic Division
The City Traffic Division was established in the early 1950’s. Lieutenant Frank McManus headed the Division. Under his direction were two or three Officers whose responsibilities consisted of parking meter and traffic violations enforcement. The Traffic Fleet consisted of a van and a three wheel motorized scooter. Today the Traffic Division Fleet consists of three marked police vehicles, two motorcycles and two marked parking enforcement vehicles. Within the Traffic Division there are separate Departments. The first department is Traffic which consists of officers whose responsibilities are impoundment of vehicles, radar and parking enforcement and any other traffic situations that may arise. The second department is Radar and Parks which consists of officers whose primary responsibilities are enforcing speed regulations and patrolling the parks. The third department is Parking Enforcement which consists of civilian officers whose primary responsibility is the enforcement of parking regulations. The departments within the Traffic Division work together to enforce the laws and to make traveling, working, and living in the City of Poughkeepsie as safe and efficient as possible.
