Marc Nelson was sworn in as Mayor of the City of Poughkeepsie Tuesday, succeeding Rob Rolison who has been elected to the New York State Senate.

Nelson also will continue to serve as city administrator, per the rules of the City’s Charter. Dutchess County Supreme Court Judge Edward McLoughlin presided over the ceremonies, which took place at The Academy.

Uncharted Founder and CEO Jessica Matthews offered welcoming remarks, and Rev. Susan Fortunato of Christ Episcopal Church read the invocation.

Rolison thanked Nelson and others for getting the city back on its feet financially, for bolstering essential city services and for continuing to put additional resources into key programs and initiatives, such as parks and youth funding. He said that he is vacating the mayor’s position, with the knowledge that the city is in excellent hands with Nelson at the helm.

Nelson said he looked forward to building on the strong progress the city has made since Mayor Rolison took office in 2016. Nelson will finish Rolison’s second term in office, which will be completed at the end of 2023. A new mayor will be elected during the 2023 election and will take office at the beginning of 2024.

Earlier in the day in the Common Council Chambers, Natasha Brown was sworn in as Council Chairwoman and Chris Grant was sworn in as the Council member for the sixth ward by Chamberlain Jasmin Davis. The Council then held an organizational meeting following by a regular meeting. You can watch those meetings here.
