The Common Council is seeking residents who would be interested in serving as a member on the Board of Assessment Review.
The Board of Assessment Review consists of three to five volunteers who have at least a general knowledge of property values within the community. The Common Council members vote to appoint BAR members.
The BAR’s sole purpose is to arrive at a fair and impartial decision regarding the assessment of the property. The BAR conducts hearings in order to evaluate grievance applications and make a determination of assessed value based on evidence submitted by the property owner.
The BAR meets once a year, the fourth Tuesday in May – “Grievance Day.” However, members are usually required to participate in additional hearings and private deliberations. Additionally, Section 523 of the Real Property Law requires BAR members to attend a training session before they can participate in the hearing and determination of complaints.
City residents interested in being a member of the Board of Assessment Review please send a resume and cover letter to Common Council Chairperson Natasha Brown at nbrown@cityofpoughkeepsie.com by Friday, March 31, 2023.
